Te Isshoku is a sushi takeout located in the heart of the Los Angeles Financial District (Downtown LA). It’s perfect for ordering high-quality to-go sushi during lunch or dinner. Don’t expect traditional sushi here; the menu introduces very fusion flavors and combinations. Chef Te Dong did a great job with combining different textures that actually work well together. I’m just saying this because there is literally red leaf lettuce in the rolls (thank you for adding that nutritional value).
The Te Isshoku Experience
Ordering from Te Isshoku is simple; you have to order online ahead of time through their website. You can choose a pick-up time that’s convenient. When it’s about time, make your way to the Bunker Hill steps. This part can be tricky because it’s not at the bottom of the steps, directly on 5th Street, and it is not on top of the steps on Hope Place either. You have to take a set of escalators up/down and find your way to the second floor.
Once you’re ready to pick up, approach the window with your order information, and they’ll hand you your goodies. The staff was so nice; she was very thankful and sincere. Such wholesome vibes!
As far as parking, it’s Downtown Los Angeles. Pray for street parking or opt for a 15-minute parking option in one of the nearby structures. Ordering here is mostly ideal if you’re working or live nearby, but it’s worth the $$$.
The Menu
There are three main entree categories at Te Isshoku. The portion size is very reasonable (generous more than anything), so one tray/order is more than enough. If you want to try out different things, find a +1 to order with and trade!
- Fat Rolled Sushi (Futomaki): These are thick rolls of sushi, almost like a kimbap, except there is actually sushi-grade fish in them. You can opt for seaweed paper or soy paper wrapping (soy paper costs extra).
- Japanese Spring Roll (Nama Harumaki): This is similar to the fat-rolled sushi, but it is wrapped in rice paper and does not have rice. Perfect for those who are cutting carbs.
- Signature Box (Catch of the Day): Bento box vibes; expect protein, rice, and salad.
Other menu selections include a vegan version, appetizers, desserts, drinks, and extra sauces.
The Order
I should have known better from the pictures, but I wanted to be a bit adventurous and ordered two plates for myself. This is why I am emphasizing that one plate is more than enough for one person.
The Yellowtail Futomaki has generously thick cuts of Japanese yellowtail and is stuffed with rice, cucumber, salad, and radish. You can taste the richness of the yellowtail. I’m a big fan of this plate.
The Spicy Scallop Spring Roll is no joke. You can taste the spiciness and freshness of the scallops, as this spring roll also has sesame, rayu (chili oil), cucumber, salad, and fresh radish. The rice paper can be a bit fragile, so handle it with some care.
Overall, this is a great sushi take-out option whether you’re looking for lunch or dinner. The price is fair, considering the portion size and quality of the fish. This is a great alternative if you’re tired of going to Kazunori, Sugarfish, and Sushi Rush in Downtown LA. Add this to your rotation, and enjoy!
