Fishwife is the latest hip tinned seafood company, capitalizing on sustainably sourced fish in a pretty packaging. Don’t let the graphic design fool you – their selections are miles above Chicken of the Sea. You can incorporate Fishwife into your next meal if you’re looking for something quick, simple, and delicious. Fishwife offers a variety of selections, whether you’re looking for tuna belly, rainbow trout, mussels, smoked salmon, sardines, albacore tuna, or even caviar.
With returning to the office and limited breakfast options nearby, I started packing an easy rice bowl to start the day. This is perfect because it takes a few minutes to wash the rice, and I can leave it in the rice cooker while getting ready. On top, I don’t need to worry about microwaving anything (especially fish) in the office. I’ve been sampling different tinned fish brands, and Fishwife did not disappoint.

Easy Rice Bowl Recipe ft. Fishwife
The best part of an easy rice bowl is the minimum effort and babysitting needed to prep.
Rice Recipe
- Cook short-grained Japanese rice (or any rice of your choice)
- After the rice finishes cooking, season the rice with rice vinegar (until the rice is somewhat loose), and add a pinch of salt and sugar (to taste – up to you), then mix
- Add optional toppings such as sesame seeds, furikake, dried seaweed bits, or anything you’d like. I’ve been adding the spicy sesame garlic crunch seasoning from Whole Foods.
Pickled Cucumber
You can choose any vegetable for an easy pickle recipe. I prefer cucumber because it goes well with the rice bowl dish.
- Slice cucumbers thinly
- Splash vinegar until cucumbers are covered
- Add salt and sugar
- Ready within 15 minutes
Assembling the Rice Bowl
Once everything is prepped, scoop the rice into the bowl, and mix in the tinned fish. You can add the pickled cucumber or vegetable to the side – you don’t need to mix this in.

Rice Roll Recipe ft. Fishwife
This recipe is similar to the rice bowl, just with an added step with a nori sheet. Using the rice recipe above, you can opt to mix in the tinned fish or layer it on top… Just like a sushi roll! This is great because you can have a taste of nori in every bite. You can also opt to make onigiri, handroll, or musubi style if you’d like!
The Rice Roll
- Cover half of the nori sheet with a thin layer of rice (rice should be warm)
- Rotate the nori sheet so the side without rice is facing you
- Roll upwards
- Slice the roll into 3/4″ pieces – you can cover your knife with rice vinegar to ensure rice doesn’t stick to it
- If you didn’t mix in the Fishwife tinned fish, you can add it to the top.

Fishwife Smoked Salmon with Chili Crisp
My absolute favorite selection from Fishwife is its smoked salmon with chili crisp, featuring Fly by Jing. I’m a fan because I’ve been adding Fly by Jing to my everyday meals, adding a Sichuan kick without feeling like my mouth is entirely numb. What a perfect collab. The price point is a bit higher than the norm because this is also smoked salmon, not your everyday tinned tuna or trout.

There are cheaper selections, but the quality isn’t compromised in the process. I would recommend looking for sales; such as Target offering $$$ off this week!
