Shins Pizza opened its doors in Cypress Park (northeast Los Angeles), a few months ago. They’re mostly known for their New York-style pizza by the slice. You can also enjoy their other creative creations and Italian Ice. Shins Pizza is located on the same block as Barria Santos, The Golden Poppy Market, and Loquat Coffee.
Shins Pizza has a heartfelt backstory, with the pizzeria dedicated to the founder’s late mother (as they would have weekly pizza night) and named after the Shin family who took him in.
pizza by the slice
We love pizza by the slice because it’s enough where you don’t need to dedicate to finishing the box. Shins Pizza does a great job of ensuring the pizza is simple, flavorful, and has an amazing crust. We don’t want a thin crust or a crust with too much density. You can also opt to purchase an entire 18″ pie or 12″ gluten-free pie.
Cheese
sopra mozzarella, tomato sauce
Pepperoni
salumeria biellese pepperoni, sicilian oregano
Veggie
sprouting broccoli, cremini mushrooms, kalamata olives, red onion, pickled fresno chili
Meat
speck, sweet chinese sausage, pepperoni, sambal
Sausage & Mushrooms
fennel sausage, cremini mushrooms, scallion
Mortadella
white pie, mezz, bellwether ricotta, garlic, mortadella
Marinara (v)
tomato sauce, garlic, capers, oregano, olive oil
I’ve had their Pepperoni and Sausage & Mushroom pizza on many occasions. PS – The pizza looks a lot better when it’s re-heated. I usually ask for the pizza as-is so I can pop it in the air fryer at home. If you decide to dine in, it’ll look a lot warmer, too.
don’t forget about the sides
The creative side of the pizza shop comes in through the sides (and the meat pizza above). This is not a typical pizzeria with breadsticks.
Celery Salad
celery, point reyes blue cheese, pickled fresno chili, pistachio, mint
Braised Kale (v)
caramelized onions, red pepper flakes, apple cider vinegar
Sauteed Cremini Mushrooms
adobo sauce, speck, scallions, togarashi
Asian Pear Salad
pears, cucumber, almonds, cilantro, tarragon, miso vinaigrette
Crispy Chicken Nuggs
ginger marinated organic chicken thigh, kimchi mayo, lemon
BBQ Pork Arancini
rice ball stuffed with bbq pork, furikake
the shins pizza experience
You can dine in by standing next to their window counter or have your own set up with crates. This is real street-style pizza. If you’re ordering to-go, my favorite thing is to ask for the pizza not to be warmed up (as-is), and put the pizza in the air fryer at home. You only need a couple of minutes in the air fryer to have the pizza crisp up (and not burn).
The parking situation is not the best because it’s street (parallel) parking. You can get lucky and find parking in the front. You might have to park a few blocks away if the shop is busy.
The staff are really friendly – big fan of their attitude and level of service. Highly recommended. You’re not paying for Papa John’s – this is better by far. Give it a try and visit their neighbors.
