The Maryposa Effect

July 6, 2024

The Maryposa Effect took place last week at The Fern to support The Calvin Preston Foundation. The Calvin Preston Foundation is a non-profit that supports children battling cancer. The story behind the foundation was very touching. I implore you to read about his story. The Maryposa Effect is a women empowerment event, showcasing women and their successes.

Although I don’t know Calvin or his mother personally, my dear friend, Paola, of Pretty Fun Things, was invited to be part of the panel speakers at The Maryposa Effect, did. She shared a heartfelt story about Calvin and the work that his mother, Mary, is doing to continue his legacy.

The Maryposa Effect

When I read about the motivation that started the first event at The Calvin Preston Foundation, I am always touched when I hear how selfless people are while fighting their own battles.

The Calvin Preston Foundation was born from a simple thought back in 2013 while Calvin was receiving treatment. While in the hospital Calvin realized he was not the only child going through this trauma and said he wanted “to give toys to kids and help make them happier while they’re sick”. The beautiful thought Calvin had became a reality in December 2014 and although Calvin had already entered heaven, we know he spearheaded this from the beginning.

The Maryposa Effect featured many women and small business owners who contributed to the event, as well as speak about their experiences and share empowering stories.

Mary did a great job with utilizing the double entendre through Maryposa, and during the event, guests were able to free butterflies, which symbolizes being able to be free and uncaged. The whole idea of the butterfly (also known as a Mariposa in Spanish), is that they started out as a caterpillar, bounded by the branches they’re able to latch on to, but eventually cacoon themselves to transform into a free being. This relates back to the intention of this event, to inspire women to grow, heal, and change, even though they are vulnerable, living through pain, and struggle.

When Women Come Together…

When women come together, beautiful things do happen! The event looked amazing with the execution of the decor, vendors, and event experience.

We have committed $200 to The Calvin Preston Foundation. Giving help is not always in monetary form. One of my favorite ways to help is making handmade cards for hospitalized kids. If you have a talent that could be integrated somewhere, make the move.
